A calm guide to your first acupuncture visit
Most people who are nervous about acupuncture are nervous about one thing: the needles. It helps to know what actually happens in the room before you arrive.
Before any needles
Your first visit starts with a conversation about your health history, current concerns and any medication you take. Your practitioner explains what they plan to do and why, and you can ask questions or stop at any point.
What it feels like
Acupuncture needles are very fine, far thinner than the needles used for injections. Most people feel a brief tap, then a dull or heavy sensation around the point. Many find the rest of the session deeply relaxing.
How long it takes
The needles usually stay in for twenty to thirty minutes while you rest. A first appointment runs longer because of the initial conversation.
What to wear and bring
Wear loose, comfortable clothing, eat a light meal a couple of hours before, and bring a list of any medication or supplements you take.
After your session
Some people feel energised, others sleepy. Drink water, avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day, and note any changes to share at your next visit.
