Five pantry swaps our nutritionists recommend
Lasting change rarely comes from a dramatic overhaul. It usually starts in the cupboard, with a handful of swaps that make the better choice the easy one.
1. Refined grains for whole grains
Swap white rice and pasta for brown rice, whole wheat pasta, oats or quinoa. They bring more fiber and tend to keep energy steadier through the afternoon.
2. Sweetened cereal for plain oats
Plain oats with fruit and a spoon of nuts or seeds make a breakfast you can adjust, without the added sugar most boxed cereals carry.
3. Chips for roasted chickpeas or nuts
A small handful of unsalted nuts or roasted chickpeas satisfies the craving for something crunchy while adding protein and fiber.
4. Sugary drinks for herbal tea or infused water
Keep a few herbal teas you genuinely enjoy, and a jug of water with citrus or cucumber in the fridge. The habit matters more than the recipe.
5. Ready sauces for a simple base
A can of tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and herbs covers most weeknight sauces with far less salt and sugar than a jar.
Start with one
Pick the swap that feels easiest and keep it for two weeks before adding another. Small, repeated changes are the ones that last.
